Thanks for the quick reply.

Well.
I just couldn't imagine that your policy server is restricted to Windows systems (respectively GUI systems) since the SFS isn't and I don't see the necessity.
That means we have to look for alternatives?

I would think that a lot of SFS users currently live with ...

We also experience the problem, that the client "wastes" 3 seconds waiting for the policy file on port 843 (validated with the Wireshark tool).
When we tried running your policy server on our debian system we experienced the following problems:

On startup
Exception in thread "main" java.awt ...

Java Garbage Collector unloading python package classes

We noticed that the Smartfox Server for our (action) game seems to halt every now and then for 2-5 seconds causing ugly delays for all players.
By turning on garbage collector logging we found out that these lags occur when a full garbage collection is done, mostly dealing with unloading about 1000 ...

dots in chat filter bad words

Does not really have to do with the preceding post, but the topic matches nicely...

I would like to filter URLs so I added "http", ".com" and some others as bad words. Unfortunately the ones starting with a "." do not seem to work.

Is there workaround?

Any insights this?
We also see lots of "Unexpected / Malformed input: java.nio.charset.MalformedInputException: Input length = 1":

Yes, exactly that is the problem :?
People are just being kicked...
We probably need to set up our own anti-flooding mechanism then.
Anyway, if we find out something, we'll keep you updated.

Nothing easier than that:
1. Go to http://www.jumpjupiter.com
2. Click on "Jetzt spielen"
3. Click on "Probe-Level jetzt spielen"
(You might as well register and check out the complete game but to test the chat filter a guest account is sufficient.)

Unfortunately the problem is difficult to ...

We experience similar problems: Users being warned and kicked for flooding while chatting normally. Unfortunately this is hard to reproduce.

Could this be caused by configuration details, for example the Warnings=false in the BadWordsFilter with an active AntiFlood filter?

okay, that's at least one good reason.
Simply using your script did not work on the first attempt, but I'll try to get it running on the weekend.
I saw some threads handling the topic. In case I don't get the problems solved I'll post there.
Thanks for your answers, Lapo.

Since our script does some more stuff it won't be just "simply".
That's why I want to find out if it's worth it - what are the advantages? Or is it the same in the end?

If you run the server as a service everything gets logged.
That's the recommended mode for running the server in a production environment.
okay, and when not running as a service? Stacktraces get swallowed?

We currently have our own start script, I think because we had problems with the default ...

well, isn't this rather problematic?
I just experienced the problem that I saw an exception on the console but did not find it in the log.
Is some information written only to the console?

I don't know if this might cause problems but I am messing around with the SFS loggers a bit in order ...

Thanks, Lapo! :D

DIPE basically consists of a physics engine running on the server plus one in every client with the server physics correcting the clients continuously.
To make this run smoothly and really real-time it takes a lot more, but I don't want to dive too deep into the details ...
