Would be best if you explained exactly which steps you have done, what IDE you're using and which OS.
Also if you're running a firewall you should make sure it's not getting in the way. (i.e. it must allow traffic on the desired port(s))

I have the same issue with debug...

I'm using inteljet IDEA to debug

My Local OS is Mac 10.12.4
My Remote OS is Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Smartfox version:2.9.0

first, it's occur below message
" Debugger failed to attach: recv failed during handshake"
I restart sfs-service.sh, and never show again,
server console show "Listening for transport dt_socket at address: 8787" at start , then init my extinsion
after that, i try to connect using inteljet IDEA debug, it's show
"Connected to the target VM, address: '127.0.0.1:8787', transport: 'socket'"
look like work, but i can not using break point at anytime,

I am not very familiar with IDEA, but it sounds like a configuration issue.
That or the code is not going through the section that has the breakpoint...

I'd suggest googling it.
