You are making some confusion. The latest FlashBuilder comes with the Flex SDK 4 but still uses the Actionscript 3 language.
There is no Actionscript 4 language in existence to this day... maybe Adobe will release in the future. I don't think it's even announced or expected.

Ah haha! Yes, I was confused, thanks for clearing that up :)

I went to the download page again since I am running 1.6.6 and need to get 1.6.8. I noticed 4 downloads. one for 32bit windows, one for 32bit linux, 64bit linux, and an OSX download.

Why is the windows download, 32bit only? I think that confused me earlier.

Ahh, the download for 1.6.8 is till 1.6.6 file name and installer. Dunno what's happening :(

Editing as i go .. :)

I installed the 1.6.6, and started it. Turns out it is 32bit, and not 64bit :( I haven't installed JAVA on this server machine, and its running 64bit windows 2008. Checked the task manager and indeed it is 32bit :(

Is there some sort of special instructions somewhere to change this over to 64bit?

Open another thread and we'll discuss this separately. This discussion should remain centered on SFS2X

My apologies, moving to a new thread.

Zanpher,
maybe you are referring to the Flex SDK 4, which is different from ActionScript 4. The latest version of ActionScript is 3, on which the Flex 4 SDK has been built. The SFS APIs do not use specific Flex 4 classes, only pure ActionScript 3 classes, so you will be able to use them with and SDKs.

Should I wait?

I've started working on a MMO game and I'm still looking around for back-end options. The front-end will be built in Flash Builder 4 and I'm leaning towards SFS for the back-end, BUT...

At this point in time, it would probably be a good idea to wait for SFS 2X. However, the '2nd half of 2010' is not very specific. A full release by September is completely different from a Beta in December. I can wait for a few months to begin development, but not until 2011.

In addition, I don't know if the SFS 2X-compatible Actionscript 3 library will also be available at that time, or if I would have to wait another couple of months for that.

Now, I understand that one can never be 100% certain about release dates, but can you be a bit more specific?

I would love to provide a specific date but with no guarantee, which is the same as not providing any :) I am sorry. The amount of work for this release is massive and we want both the beta and final releases to be out when everything is ready and not be subject to pressures that could undermine the quality of the release. Hope you'll understand.

With this said I would also I would like to point out that our first beta will be production ready! By beta we mean lacking of some of the expected features and documentation, not an untested/unusable release.
(The core server engine, BitSwarm, has been already tested for tens of thousands users and we'll publish the comparison with other engines as well)

As regards the API, they are under development and testing. With the first beta release we will provide both Actiosncript 3 and .Net/Unity API out of the box.

Hope it helps

I understand. Have you considered an Alpha release so we can begin our development earlier? I assume that all the classes and methods have already been specified, especially with regards to the client API. At the very least, we could get our design done before the Beta version launch.

I second that request. Something we could begin playing with would be fantastic.

Keep up the good work guys, I'm very impressed and excited!

Likewise, I'm in the same boat. We know we're going with SFS2X so having our hands on it as early as possible for dev/testing will be very much appreciated. Thanks.

I've been thinking.... Lapo is probably just as excited as we are, if not more so. He has been living and breathing this project for a year and a half, and now it's close enough to completion that he feels he can tell everyone about it.

I think he is probably dying to release it - so perhaps we should leave it to him to decide when it's ready, rather than behaving like kids begging for sweets :D

This is quite offensive, actually. We are not talking about the release of a new version of a game here. I'm investing a great deal of time and money in my project and I'm not begging anyone. I'm a prospect client and I state my needs.

The real issue here is that the new version will not be backwards-compatible. If SFS2x is not ready when I can no longer delay work on the main game server, I'll just go with something else (not SFS at all). It's that simple.

Sorry it wasn't intended to be offensive.

I think the best thing to do is setup a date for an update on the beta release, so that everyone gets a feeling for the timeline and decides what to do :)

I propose that we give you an update at the end of this month, let's say Mon 28th 2010 with a realistic date for the pre-release/beta version.

Hope it helps

That would be great, thanks.
