Is it easy to create a game now with 1.6 and then later on change the networking part to 2x? And then I mean mostly the client side. Or are there to many big differences.
Client side there will be small differences.
Is the private beta also for people that use smartfox but do not yet have a license?
The private beta is intended for developers/companies that already own one or more commercial license of SmartFoxServer.

This is not because we want to exclude anyone in particular, but the private beta requires that developers are already familiar with SmartFox so they can immediately jump into coding and testing without step by step docs, and long overviews.

Ok thanks for clearing that out Lapo, but if I buy a licence now can I use it on Smartfox 2X?

No, if you want to use SmartFoxServer 2X you will need to wait for the public beta.

2.X

Sorry guys no, we haven't started the private one yet :)
August will be vacation time, so I can imagine that early September is very likely. If all goes smooth by that time the product will be available together with the commercial licenses, prices and all the rest :)

Hi Lapo,

What performance benefits could we expect to gain from switching from JSON to the new binary protocol. I noticed your examples show from XML to binary.

I dont think there is much difference, on a basic level between JSON and binary - but I could be wrong. This is not accounting for the compression of course.

Also, what difference could we expect in serialization / deserialization times between the two?

We didn't test against JSON so I can't say, but there will be significant advantages in any non trivial message. When the compression kicks in you save quite a lot of bytes especially in larger packets.

Also the binary protocol is parsed at light speed and it's definitely more light-weight than JSON because it uses lower level data types (bytes and ByteBuffers vs Strings and StringBuffers)

cheers

Thanks Lapo,

It would be really useful I think to have some performance comparisons between JSON and Binary, with compression turned on and off - for the following metrics

- Packet sizes
- Parse times

I think nearly all of us working with Unity3D and SFS use JSON protocol as the default (or should).

Awesome news, Lapo! We can't wait to start working with the new version.
Looks like it is time to start re-writing a bunch of actionscript extensions to java classes. Do you know when pricing is going to be set?

When the the private beta is closed and the public one starts.
At that point we'll have the commercial licenses ready, prices and promotional offers.

As we said all over the SFS2X threads prices won't change dramatically and we'll be adding more licensing options. We think this will satisfy all kinds of different budget requirements.
