bitmap skins, mask or break apart?

Anyone have any context as to if OS will run better with masked images in tiles or if they are broke apart and "extra" bits erased?

We don't have specific tests about this, but I think that masking would add an overhead affecting performances. Also, under the skins creation point of view, masking bitmaps is much more time consuming than removing the transparent pixels.

So are you just erasing the pixels? or does flash have some way to just selecting all the transparent pixels and deleting them (like a magic wand)
