Why wouldn't OpenSpace be distributed like the SmartFox Flash API is, so we could just add it to the source path in Flex Builder?

Because OpenSpace v1 is a Flash component which is not compatible with Flex natively, so adding its swc to a Flex project is not enough. That is why in OpenSpace v2 we will distribute a specific Flex version.
