JAVA vs ActionScript

Sorry for more newbie Question.

Is Java Extension by anyway faster and more reliable than ActionScript?

Is there anything else I should know between the 2 beside the fact that JAVA's more expandable?

Java is much much faster than AS on the server side.
The gain is between 10-100 times depending on how complex your code is.
