Mac OSX Installataion - SmartFox wont start

Post by Soleil »

I'm trying to decide between SmartFox and ElectroServer... I'm not having much luck with either so far.

I downloaded SFS Pro. I copied the "SmartFoxServer PRO 1.6.6" folder into my Applications folder. This folder contains the SmartFoxServer Application file - I double-click it (or drag it to the dock and open it)... either way, the "SmartFoxServer PRO" window flashes for a moment, then goes away, and obviously the server is not running.

Should have known it was too easy to be true.

Any suggestions?

Strange.
There is probably an error while starting.
Try the following:
- open a terminal window
- cd to {Smartfox-install-dir}/Server
- type ./start.sh

This will launch SmartFox and you should be able to see any error message.
Let us know what you get.

That seems to work. It lists all the zones, etc, and ends with this:

Code: Select all

Is it normal to have to start from Terminal every time? I'd love to be able to start it from the dock.

The server starts clean, there is no error.

No it is not.
In fact we provide the SmartFoxServer.app to start the server, and which can be dragged in the Dock for quicker access.
Sounds very odd that it doesn't work for you, we use a lot of Macs here and have never encountered this problem before.
We tested on the last three OSX editions: Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard

I did the installation the same way on my Mac Pro and it works. Came back to my MacBook Pro, deleted everything and tried again. No luck. Still flashes up for a split second then dies. Would there be an error log somewhere? I checked Server/logs but didn't see anything new.

I can piece together the error message that is shown very briefly in the SFS window before it dies:

./start.sh: line 1 java: command not found

Well ... this very unexpected under MacOS X, because Java is installed out of the box. There's probably something wrong with your OS, you might want to run the system updater and see if you can get Java installed.
