Is it possible to have, like in theochat, for the avatar chat to have a background for each room?

Yes of course you can, but this has little to do with the server side. It's more a client side question. Basically all you have to do is load a new background image or SWF file each time you change room.
If you have a basic understanding of Actionscript you shouldn't have problems creating it.

Ok, i know the command for checking which, like if mapname = "the hall" do something (i know it isnt that, just giving an example), do what is the command for showing an image or swf image in actionscript.

Probably, the easiest way would be to have all of the potential backgrounds as frames in a movie clip behind the avatar area, so then you could use a gotoAndStop(x) with x being the background you want.
