Oh, ok, thanx for the clarification about SFS actually using Rhino. I'll probably settle for Python then.

Oh and Starvingeyes, SmartFoxServer is not a game maker. It's here to help in the development of a multiplayer game by saving you the time it would have taken to code a server-client communication system. And for that purpose, it is very simple and almost 3-step and it's done. I mean, connect, login and join a room, that's all it requires and you got yourself a client-server communication. And also, it's very hard to be designer and developer at the same time, flash kinda allow it, but maybe you should think about teaming up with a full developer and this way you could concentrate on the design element. You'll end up with more solid products in a shorter amount of time.

i don't think you really read any of my posts. it's easy to get running on my home computer but I can't figure out how to get it to work on the internet and i am stuck here. for that reason, i'm just not going to get into learning this program.

also, it is used to make game interaction so it is a game maker. regular flash people can't figure it out and sfs's potential is not used.

really successful programs are accessible to more people...and one of these days a smart company that isn't run by server nerds will make something that opens up real time interaction in a successful way (for people like me, everyday regular flash developers). for now you server nerds get feel special for knowing how this damn thing works without any real instructions or good help...hooray for you. what do the rest of do?...apparently not turn to sfs as an option.

You have tons of complaints and very few questions, we are not going anywhere like this.

It seems like you expected that SmartFoxServer would do the magic to create or transform existing games into multi-player ones in minutes... well sorry this not possible.
If you're not willing to invest some time into learning what's behind a multi player application, how it works in its essence and learn from the many example provided then I'd suggest to abandon the idea of creating a multiplayer app.

Multiplayer games are complex applications that require a good understanding of the nature of the network.

What SmartFoxServer does is trying to make the learning curve as simple as possible without making it simplistic.
We offer a set of tutorials that start from the very basics (anyone can understand the SimpleConnect example) and gradually add more complexity up to topics such as real time, database interaction, server side logic etc...
It takes time and patience to learn and we're trying to make this as fun as possible with real life examples and detailed tutorials.
All this comes essentially for free as you can download the whole thing and use it and test it without time limits. Additionally we offer quick help in this board, regardless you have bought a license or not.

Still complaining? ;)

If your main problem is essentially related to the lack of knowledge in managing a server you have multiple options:
-> find a developer/sys admin who can do this for you
-> buy services from an hosting company, so you don't worry about all the server side hacking
-> check www.shockwaveserver.com which provides SmartFoxServer ready hosting options. No installation hassles.

Cheers

i had one complaint and one question this whole time and i finally got some help. thank you lapo.

i didn't realize shockwaveserver existed, and beyond that i had no idea how to do the "server side hacking" that you speak of and i was under the impression that there was no way around this. that's why i was so angry.

i don't unreasonably expect magic, or for sfs to turn my single player games into multiplayer games...just help through this one important beginning step. I am not afraid to learn and put the time in, but I just wanted to make sure that if i did learn how to do all the sfs code, that when i actually had to make this thing work in the real world (and not just on the server running on my home computer) that it was going to work. now i know there's a way around this bump in the road, now i will try it.

so if i buy the shockwaveserver hosting, and just upload the tutorials, they should work with zero configuration right?

It depends.
The old AS 2.0 example SWFs are pre-compiled to run on the localhost (127.0.0.1) so if you want to point them your live server you will have to simply open the example change the address and export them again.

The new AS 3 examples use an external .xml file to specify the server IP address and port
