Trouble storing Spanish characters in DB

I'm using MySQL DB to store characters for a chat application. Everything works fine when the entry is made directly into the DB. But, when I'm accessing the DB through SmartFox, some of the characters either go missing or get replaced. It would be really helpful if someone can suggest how to rectify the issue. Thanks.

database encodiong = utf8 ?
